Oburu explains how Ruto has managed to lure Nyanza to his camp

Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has explained the newfound acceptance of President William Ruto by the Luo Nyanza community.

Speaking during the president’s visit to ACK cathedral church in Alego Usonga on Sunday, August 31, 2025, Oburu stated that Ruto had earned the love of a people keen to reciprocate the love he has shown.

Oburu cited the appointment of two CSs hailing from the Siaya region as a strong indication of the president’s love of the region.

Love for the people

“I want to welcome you to our county. Our people are always straightforward; if they don’t want you, they always tell you to your face. And as you can see from their faces, they love you,” he stated.

“You have shown you love them. First you have given them John Mbadi as finance minister. The docket has never been held by a Luo. That is a strong show of love for our people,” he stated

Oburu also lauded the appointment of Wandayi as the new Energy CS, stating that the CS has hit the ground running in his new role.

“You also gave our son here the ministry of energy. He is very energetic and befitting that ministry. He is always everywhere in Kenya, moving and implementing electricity projects,” he added.

During the function, Oburu also dismissed the chants of “Ruto must go” that have featured in recent protests, insisting that the Constitution provides only five avenues for a sitting president to leave office.

“Mr. President, we want you to continue. We don’t want to engage too much in the future talks about Ruto must go, Ruto must go, Ruto must go. Ruto is going nowhere,” Oburu stated.

Removing Ruto

The senator outlined the possible circumstances under which a president could leave office, emphasising that none applied to Ruto at the moment.

“Ruto is going nowhere because there are only five ways you can remove a president. First, either he resigns or he dies. If he doesn’t die, he is defeated in an election. And if he is not defeated in an election, then something attacks his brain, he becomes a vulture. And none of those things exist with a president,” he said.
