Obado surrenders property as court allows DPP to end cases

The High Court has allowed the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to seize properties worth Sh235 million belonging to former Migori governor Okoth Obado, his children and close associates.

Justice Esther Maina yesterday allowed a request by the anti-graft body to terminate two cases of Sh1.9 billion and Sh73 million involving unexplained wealth and proceeds of crime against Obado, his four children, businessman Jared Peter Oluoch Kwaga and his companies as they had settled the matter out of court.

EACC urged the court to adopt the consent between it and the defendants. The court was told that the parties agreed to terminate the case after Obado and his co-suspects agreed to surrender two Toyota Land Cruiser V8 and eight prime properties.

“The defendants have offered to surrender and the commission has accepted to receive eight properties and two motor vehicles all worth Sh235,600,000 to be disposed of by way of public auction in full and final settlement of the two claims,” the lawyer stated
