Nyutu says reconstitution of house committees is a purge targeting Mt Kenya leaders

Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu has shared his thoughts on the removal of Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro as the Chairperson of the Budget and Appropriations Committeee following a recent shake-up in the house committees.
Speaking during an interview with a local TV station, Nyutu underscored that the election of Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi as the Chairperson of the Budget and Appropriations Committeee (BAC) in place of Ndindi Nyoro is part of a strategic purge targeting leaders from the Mount Kenya region.
He confidently explained that there was no initial plan to reconstitute the committees, and that it was something concoted to kick out the Mt Kenya leaders in a move aimed at ensuring they are politically impotent.

In particular, Senator Nyutu asserted that given Nyoro’s promising leadership, he was carefully targeted to clip his wings and ensure he stagnates in his leadership skills.
“It was not news yesterday that Atandi was elected as the budget chair, everybody knew he was going to be the budget chair, if you look at it, nobody wanted to reconstitute the committees, it was something conceited to kick out all the leaders from the Mount Kenya region and anybody that voted no or abstained from the motion of impeaching Gachagua was not allowed to survive as a chair in both houses,” he quipped.
“It is a purge against Mount Kenya leaders and Ndindi Nyoro was not going to survive it because this is a promising leader in Mount Kenya.”

Asked why the position holds much importance to necessitate Nyoro’s ouster, the senator affirmed that apart from the exciting sitting allowance which exceeds that of other members, the position comes with prestige and power that enables one to grow their leadership skills.
He equally added that the target mounted on Mt Kenya leaders aims at settling political scores and ensuring they stagnate in their skills.
Nyoro was oustered alongside Embakasi North MP James Gakuya who previously chaired the Trade and Industry Committee, Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba who chaired the Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee (CIOC) and Runyenjes MP Karemba Muchangi who previously held the Labour committee, among others.
Speaking after Nyoro’s removal on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, the leader of the Majority Party in the National Assembly Kimani Ichung’wah said the shake-up would result in serious changes in the allocation of resources to various parts of the country.
“We have now reconstituted a new Budget and Appropriations Committee. It will not be business as usual. This house will not sit back and allow members who sit in the BAC to appropriate money to only their constituencies at the expense of other Kenyans,” Ichung’wah noted.
