Murang’a County Senator Joe Nyutu has confirmed that he will not be part of President William Ruto’s State of the Nation address in parliament.

Speaking to a local TV station on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, Nyutu dismissed the function as another formality for the president to push his own agenda and peddle lies.

Ruto is expected to deliver his annual address during a special sitting of both houses on Thursday, November 20, 2025.

‘Enough of the lies’

“The people whom I represent do not want to listen to Ruto and his lies. They have had enough of his lies, and I would not be representing them with my presence there,” he opined.

“Sometimes, you choose to have your peace. If you know you are coming to be lied to, why should I waste my time coming to listen to you? It will be another formality to say things he does not believe in and get cheers from his team of supporters,” he stated.

The senator notes that Ruto had shown little commitment to address issues raised from similar sessions, decrying that the planned session would not be an exception.

He asserts that nothing substantive will come out of the function as the president pushes his own agenda and as his loyalists within the National Assembly cheer on.

‘Expect nothing much’

“You need to ask yourself how many issues he has made commitments to or started doing from the past state of the nation’s address. It will be all about pushing a legislative agenda, as it has been his characteristic; Ruto wants to convert everything into a campaign platform for himself. So do not expect much apart from members of the two houses heaping praises on him after saying nothing much and lying to the people,” he added.

According to a communication from the speakers of both chambers, the session will commence at 2:30 pm in the National Assembly Chamber, Main Parliament Buildings.

Ruto’s address is expected to outline the government’s progress over the past year, key policy priorities, and plans for the coming year. Traditionally, such an address provides updates on the nation’s economic performance, governance, development agenda, and social welfare programs.
