Nyutu blames police inaction for Ksh200M Murang’a looting Loss
By Arnold Ngure, July 10, 2025Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu has implicated the police over what he termed reluctance in responding to the looting of supermarkets owned by businesswoman Annabel Njambi in the county.
Speaking on Thursday, July 10, 2025, during a live TV interview, Nyutu stated that the supermarket owner had raised an alarm, which was not responded to in time.
“The looting that happened in County Supermarket in Kabati is something that Njambi, the proprietor, had raised the alarm on about three hours before it happened,” Nyutu said.
Broad daylight
“The police did not intervene in any way. It was in broad daylight, then the president comes lamenting like Njambi, who has lost Ksh200 million.”
In an interview after the loss, Njambi told local TV stations that her businesses in Kenol, Kagumo, and Kabati were targeted and that some 300 employees had been rendered jobless as a result of the destruction.

“They started with Kabati, where they destroyed the whole shop and actually put it on fire. They came to Kenol and destroyed my other shop. At the same time, there were other goons in Kagio and Kagumo who also destroyed my shops completely,” Njambi said.
Ksh200 million loss
“Some even took my tuk-tuk and gas cylinders. In terms of shillings, we have lost Ksh200 million, because some of our buildings are completely damaged, and we have the lootings, and some people carried even our shelves,” she added.
“In Kenol, they left the first supermarket and came to me. They were going round and in the whole town, nobody was touched apart from me. That is economic sabotage. Somebody wants me finished.”

Her adjacent petrol station was equally vandalized and fuel destroyed in the melee that ensued.
President William Ruto has now directed the police to shoot individuals found destroying property and looting businesses as a way of trying to bring sanity to the protests in the country.
This comes after the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) revealed that more than 30 people were killed during the commemoration of the Saba Saba Day on July 7, 2025.
KNCHR also disclosed that over 500 people were arrested during the protests, which turned violent in the satellite towns of Nairobi, and saw the presence of police officers in unmarked vehicles patrolling the streets.
