Nyamira governor Amos Nyaribo has told off his political opponents, accusing them of undermining his leadership.

Nyaribo who was speaking at Uhuru Gardens in Nyamira town yesterday when he issued bursaries worth Sh66 million to secondary school learners accused politicians seeking the governor’s seat in the next election of working tirelessly to sabotage his development agenda in order to gain political mileage.

The governor said his opponents were determined to create the impression that the county was lagging behind in development, hence making him unpopular among the electorate.

“Why is it that only politicians who are interested in my gubernatorial position are the ones seeing problems that are in Nyamira? If they mean well for the residents of Nyamira, then they should come out with ideas on how to improve because I may not be perfect. If they are honest, let them come to me and bring workable ideas on improving whatever they think is not working for the county,” Nyaribo said.

While addressing around 300 learners who benefitted from the county bursaries, Nyaribo said the county government has revised its funding strategy to ensure that the departments of Early Childhood Development Education and Vocational Training are given priority in the budgetary allocations.

Nyaribo noted that the bursary program which was targeting secondary school learners will have to be gradually changed following the transition to competence-based curriculum. During the ceremony, Nyaribo also issued instructional materials for 27 vocational training centers in the county.

Last year, Nyamira, MCAs tabled an impeachment motion against Governor Nyaribo. On September 26, 30 MCAs managed to access the Nyamira County Assembly premises despite being sealed off by police after Nyaribo supporters barricaded the gate with stones.

Esise MCA Josiah Mang’era tabled the motion to remove Nyaribo from office on nine grounds, including abuse of office.

Mang’era listed nine counts of abuse of office, including misuse of public funds, favouritism, irregular recruitment of staff, and flagging off of empty containers disguised as medical equipment.

The MCA said they have enough evidence to substantiate their claims against the embattled governor.
