Calls for caution

NTSA urged all PSV, commercial and private drivers to exercise maximum caution, especially during the festive season. It called on motorists to observe speed limits, avoid reckless overtaking, take breaks when tired, and remain alert to prevent further loss of lives.

The crash happened on Sunday morning, December 7, 2025, in the Masenyi area near Voi. The PSV was heading to Mombasa, while the trailer was travelling in the opposite direction. The two vehicles collided head-on.

The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) confirmed the incident and blamed the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) for failing to upgrade the busy highway into a dual carriageway. MAK said the lack of expansion has contributed to several deadly crashes over the years.

The group claimed that several travellers died in the Sunday crash and that only three people survived with serious injuries. However, official agencies have not yet released the confirmed number of fatalities.

Photos from the scene show the front of the PSV completely destroyed, while the trailer suffered minor damage. Both vehicles landed off the road after the collision. Motorists stopped to help, and police officers and emergency responders arrived shortly after to assist survivors and secure the area.

Busia crash

The crash came two days after another fatal accident on Friday, December 5, in Busia County. In that incident, a PSV belonging to the Sugar Zone Sacco overturned in the Wakhungu area of Nangina Ward in Funyula constituency.

The vehicle was travelling from Bumala town towards Port Victoria when it reportedly burst its front tyre, causing the driver to lose control. Four people died: the driver, a woman, and two men. Residents and local authorities worked together to rescue survivors, who were taken to Nangina Mission Hospital.

Samia Sub-County OCPD Richard Moracha said investigations into the Busia crash are ongoing. Preliminary reports point to a tyre burst as the likely cause, but officers will confirm the details once the full probe is completed.
