Nominees to SRC promise to prioritise MPs’ allowances, salaries

By , October 1, 2019

Nominees shortlisted to represent the Parliament in the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) have promised to push for improved welfare for MPs if approved.

The nominees, who are all former MPs, told legislators yesterday they will not only ensure their agenda is pushed forward, but they would also address the wrangles between the august House and SRC.

Appearing before the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) chaired by National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi for interviews, they said among the things they would push for include better remuneration for MPs, including house, mileage and car allowances.

The nominees included Abdirahman Ali (former Wajir senator), Amina Abadalla (former Nominated MP), Andrew Toboso (Butere), Isaack Melly (former Uasin Gishu senator), Michael Onyula (former Butula MP) and Rachel Ameso (former Kakamega Woman Rep).

“I have lived the life of an MP and a lot of what is out there about remuneration package of MPs is misinformation by people who have not lived the life of an MP,” said Abdalla.

The interviews come after Muturi rejected the nomination of former Senator Halima Abdille last year who has since been given an ambassadorial position.
