Njuri Ncheke SG calls for investigations into property destructions, release of youth arrested during protests
The Njuri Ncheke Council of Elders has called on the Ministry of Interior, led by Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, to investigate the recent destruction of properties during demonstrations.
Led by Secretary General Josphat Murangiri, the council urged a thorough investigation into property damage and the arrest of those involved in such acts.
Njuri Ncheke appeal
Murangiri also appealed to Kindiki to release the youth who were arrested during the protests and are found to be innocent.
“I request that the Ministry of Interior, led by CS Prof. Kindiki, investigate all the cases of those who destroyed people’s property and that perpetrators be arrested. Let the innocent youth be released immediately,” he said in a press briefing.
The demonstrations saw significant damage to both private and public property. Among the damaged properties were the National Assembly, Supreme Court building, City Hall, Uganda House, Safaricom shop on Kenyatta Avenue, police premises and vehicles, Embu and Machakos county assemblies, private businesses, and other properties.
Further protests took place last Tuesday, with Nairobi and Mombasa witnessing instances of looting. However, Nairobi remained largely peaceful on Thursday despite an anticipated protest scheduled as part of a campaign dubbed ‘Seven Days of Rage.’
The city’s streets were clear of any signs of impending protests by Thursday afternoon, although a noticeable police presence persisted, albeit reduced from Tuesday, July 2, 2024.
Thursday calm
Most businesses in Nairobi were open, but foot traffic remained low as many feared being caught in clashes between protesters and police.
Moi Avenue, known as a main battleground for such confrontations, remained peaceful.
The calm follows claims by political leaders and human rights activists that the peaceful demonstrations had been hijacked by hired goons.
