Nithi Bridge to be elevated 100 metres above the ground

By , April 29, 2026

KeNHA is undertaking a comprehensive redesign and realignment of the Nithi Bridge together with the approach roads, with the sole aim of improving safety and addressing the long-standing history of accidents at the site.

In a statement by the authority on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, KeNHA announced that the total length of bridge and approach roads would be 2.7 kilometres.

“The bridge itself is an 880-metre-long structure with the highest depth to the ground being 100 metres high from the ground. The total bridge and approach roads length would be 2.7 kilometres,” KeNHA said.

In addition, KeNHA has conducted public and stakeholder sensitisation meetings with residents to explain how the construction activities and the planned road changes will be carried out. The agency has also mapped out the land to be acquired for the Construction works.

According to KeNHA, geotechnical investigations are already going on to enable a detailed design to be produced for construction purposes. The construction of the contractor camp on the site has also been affected.

For the immediate construction works, the Authority has stated that it is awaiting the Gazettement of the affected land parcels and owners to enable the land acquisition process.

“The Authority is grateful for the support that the public has shown during the Stakeholder engagements and hopes that this will be furthered to ensure faster works execution to realise the Project,” KeNHA said.

Ruto’s pledge on Nthi Bridge

Sometime back in 2025, President William Ruto assured that he would repair the Nithi Bridge to prevent further accidents and loss of life to families.

At the time, Ruto said he would ensure the Nithi Bridge is completed before the 2027 general elections, adding that it has caused damage.

The president said he had checked the design, stating it is okay and will help avoid accidents at the Nithi Bridge.

“You told me that we shall have a fall out about this Nithi Bridge, you told me to either fix the bridge or we will fall out. I heard you, and I will fix it. It requires Ksh7 billion, which is a lot of money, but I will fix it by all means. We are starting the procurement of the Nithi Bridge tomorrow. Not because you are here, no, it is because you told me there are consequences,” he said.

“It is an expensive bridge, but we must do it to save lives, to ensure motorists, passengers using that side of the road do not endanger their lives.”
