Night fire razes Nanyuki’s market, leaving traders counting heavy losses
By Emmanuel Rono, May 24, 2026Nanyuki New Market traders in Laikipia County are counting losses after a devastating fire razed sections of the trading hub, leaving behind huge destruction.
In a statement on his Facebook page on Sunday, May 24, 2026, Laikipia Senator John Kinyua expressed deep sympathy to the affected traders, noting that while no lives were lost in the incident, the economic impact on families and small business owners was severe.
“My heart goes out to the Nanyuki New Market community following the unfortunate fire disaster. We thank God that no life has been lost but the losses are of unimaginable magnitude,” Kinyua said.

Laikipia East Member of Parliament (MP) Mwangi Kiunjuri has noted that immediately after receiving reports of the fire, they moved swiftly to coordinate emergency response efforts with KAF Nanyuki Airbase.
“The Laikipia County Fire-fighting team were first to arrive. I also recognise the efforts of the Nyeri county standby team from Narumoro town, who came later to assist in putting out the fire. Residents, well-wishers, and the British Army BATUK camp have since joined ongoing efforts to contain the fire, which has since been put out. We remain grateful that no injuries or fatalities have been reported,” Kiunjuri said in a post on his Facebook page.
Call for emergency response system
The senator used the incident to urge the county government to strengthen disaster preparedness and emergency response systems, warning that better planning is needed to prevent similar tragedies or reduce their impact in future.

He further called on residents, leaders, and well-wishers to rally behind the victims, emphasising the need for collective support to help restore the market and revive livelihoods that depend on it.
“To the county government of Laikipia, you should invest more in disaster preparedness and response. I beseech us all to stand with the victims and help bring our market back to life,” Kinyua said.
“To the resilient traders of Nanyuki, please know that you are not alone. I stand with you fully and remain committed to supporting every effort aimed at helping affected families recover, rebuild, and restore hope to our market community,” Kiunjuri added.
