Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa has been released on a Ksh7 million bond with two sureties or a cash bail of Ksh4 million with two contact persons.

Nick was arrested on Friday afternoon by the DCI officers who took him to the Gigiri Police Station. At the station, he was grilled on the alleged misuse of public funds at FKF.

His release is a blow to the prosecution team that sought to detain Mwendwa for more days as they continue to investigate him with crimes relating to the fraudulent acquisition of public property.

State Prosecutor Everlyn Onunga also wanted the embattled FKF president to be detailed for more days to prevent his interference with potential witnesses.

Mwendwa’s lawyers led by Eric Mutua, however, protested the plea by the DCI noting that their quest to detain him did not meet the legal threshold. They further noted that there was no proof that Mwendwa could interfere with the evidence.

Mwendwa was, however, released on bond terms as he waits for the court’s ruling, on Wednesday, on whether the prosecution team will be allowed to detain him for 14 more days pending the investigations.

Though he secured his release, the court barred him from various activities including attending football matches and accessing his FKF offices.

“He has been bounded by the following terms; no access to his office or the building that houses FKF offices, no access to FKF workers, no address to the media at all, and shall not attend to any football-related activities until the ruling on the case is made,” Senior Resident Magistrate at Milimani Law Courts Wandia Nyamu ruled.
