Which way Azimio?
Reactions continue to pour concerning President William Ruto’s new cabinet as he announced the first 11 members of a broad-based government, recycling some old faces, to the chagrin of a section of Kenyans calling for reforms and transformation in governance.
But with Azimio la Umoja coalition chief Raila Odinga on the side of Ruto, a split seems to be in the offing as he continues to be sidelined in his calls for dialogue even as his co-principals agitate for action in support of the Gen Zs.
On Saturday, Busia governor Paul Otuoma gave Raila his backing on the call for dialogue, saying in his aspiration to become Africa’s top diplomat, the ODM party leader had the responsibility to stabilise his country through talks.
Otuoma even threatened that the ODM supporters could begin counter-protests to those opposed to the planned dialogue which could result in a government of national unity.
Education funding model
The new education model continues to brew mixed reactions, with leaders lamenting it could potentially disadvantage continuing students.
According to Busia senator Okiya Omtatah, the model has transferred the burden of higher education to parents who are currently struggling to meet the cost of living.
Omtatah revealed that he has so far received messages from students contemplating dropping out or deferring their studies due to high education costs in the country.
“A number of comrades have reached out decrying the now high fees charged by universities compounded by the high cost of accommodation and upkeep. It’s important for education to be accessible to all who want to pursue it,” part of Omtatah’s statement on Saturday, July 20, 2024, read.
Blackout to affect 2 counties
Kenya Power has announced a planned blackout that will affect parts of Nakuru and Kakamega counties on Sunday, July 21, 2024.
The utility company cited routine network maintenance as the reason for the planned interruption.
“Good Evening. The listed areas will be affected by planned power interruptions tomorrow (21st July 2024). The interruption is part of network maintenance.”
