July 1, 2024: Top news events to look out for today
Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.
Ruto’s interview
Reactions continue to pour in following President William Ruto’s recent interview with the media.
In his interview, Ruto categorically labelled those who invaded and set fire to part of Parliament as criminals, not protesters.
He vowed to implement austerity measures to reduce government expenditure and insisted that he has no blood on his hands following the deadly protests.
His responses have elicited strong reactions from the online community, with more expected as the week progresses.
EACC Court Case
The case of William Waweru Maina and David Kaindi Mutwiwa is set for hearing this week. The two are charged with willful failure to comply with the applicable law relating to the procurement of services and abuse of office.
The allegations relate to irregularities in the procurement of uniform dress No.1 materials worth Ksh11.5 million by senior officers of the Kenya Wildlife Service in the 2013/2014 Financial Year.
The case will be heard at the Milimani Corruption Court and is set to run until Wednesday.
Admission of Judges
Chief Justice Martha Koome is expected to admit 401 new advocates to the bar on Monday at the Supreme Court.
This follows a previous exercise where advocates took the oath during their admission to the bar in a ceremony presided over by CJ Koome at the Supreme Court in March.
That session saw Koome preside over the admission of 339 lawyers to the roll of advocates. The upcoming event continues this tradition of strengthening the legal profession in Kenya.
