Newly-elected MSAKE officials cite forebearers of dishonesty
Members of the Medical Students’ Association of Kenya (MSAKE) have accused their predecessors of failing to provide proper handover of financial records and assets to the newly elected officials.
They are also raising concerns that the former officials have continued to engage in unauthorized activities using the name and the logo of the association despite their term in office having expired.
“It has come to our attention that individuals previously associated with MSAKE have used the organization’s resources and hosted events without proper authorization. These individuals, according to state records, are Dr Andrew Were, Zebedee Nyakwara Montanya, and Dr John Kibet, who held the positions of Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer of MSAKE, respectively,” the association said in a statement.
In a bid to resolve the leadership impasse that has rocked the medical students’ body, Maria Murugi, the chairperson of the Association of Kenyatta University Medicine Students (AKUMS) which is a constituent of MSAKE had written to the Office of the Attorney General (AG) in March seeking to compel the AG to nullify the election to office of the current officials of MSAKE.
In her letter, Murugi had alleged that she was among the members who participated in the elections of the MSAKE and disputed the current officials on the basis of Article 7 of the Constitution of the society which states that the President’s council is made up of chairpersons or presidents such as herself.
She further contented that it is the presidents who appoint the executive board and that the officials on record do not correspond with the elected officials from interviews conducted in November 2023.
Murugi had therefore challenged the general meeting held by the society in October 2023 where the current officials of the society were elected stating it was not constitutional as it did not include a majority of the current presidents of various medical schools and that two of the elected officials namely Andrew Were and John Kibet are not medical students.
