Netanyahu reaffirms Israel’s protection of Christians in Easter message
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu extended warm Easter greetings to Christians in Israel, the United States, and across the globe on April 5, 2026.
In a post on X, Netanyahu said: “To our Christian friends in Israel, the United States and around the world, we wish you a blessed and joyful Easter.”
He noted that while Christians endure severe persecution in countries including Syria, Lebanon, Nigeria, and Turkey, Israel stands alone in the region as a protector of its growing Christian population.
The statement comes amid heightened tensions following the outbreak of direct conflict between the US-Israel alliance and Iran on February 28, 2026.
Operation Epic Fury (US) and Roar of the Lion (Israel) targeted Iranian leadership, resulting in the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several top officials. Iran retaliated with ballistic missiles and drones aimed at Israel and US bases in the Gulf.
Israel’s Christian population grows amid regional decline
Israel’s Christian population, numbering approximately 185,000 to 190,000, about 1.9 per cent of the total population, has shown steady growth over recent decades. ManyIsraeli Christians, largely Arab Christians in cities such as Nazareth and Haifa, enjoy full citizenship rights, access to education, and participation in public life, including increasing enlistment in the Israel Defense Forces.
This contrasts sharply with neighbouring countries. According to Open Doors’ 2026 World Watch List, Syria ranks sixth among the most dangerous countries for Christians, while Nigeria ranks seventh with thousands of faith-related Christian deaths annually. Persecution in Lebanon, Turkey, and Iran continues to drive emigration and shrink long-standing Christian communities.
Netanyahu emphasised that Israel safeguards holy sites in Jerusalem, Christianity’s spiritual birthplace, despite ongoing security threats. “Even under fire, our commitment is unwavering: to defend life, to safeguard liberty, and to ensure that every believer can pray in peace,” he said.

Cultural fallout and message of hope
The Easter message coincides with reports of significant cultural destruction in Iran from US-Israeli strikes. Iranian officials cited damage to heritage sites, including the Golestan Palace in Tehran, and at least 56 other museums and monuments nationwide. US and Israeli officials say operations target military infrastructure, not cultural sites, though international debate continues.
Pope Leo XIV has appealed for dialogue and de-escalation, urging protection of civilians and prayers for peace across conflict zones. Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued travel advisories and evacuation orders for nationals in affected areas.
Netanyahu concluded his Easter post with a universal appeal: “May the message of renewal, hope, and faith shine brightly in your homes and hearts. Happy Easter.” His words seek to reaffirm Israel’s commitment to religious liberty even amid ongoing conflict, positioning the country as a haven for Christians in a turbulent region.
