Nelson Koech: Police must investigate Kitengela rally chaos
By Ndiritu Wanjiru, February 16, 2026Belgut Constituency Member of Parliament, who is also the chairperson of the defence committee in the National Assembly, Nelson Koech, has called on the police to investigate the chaos witnessed in a rally in Kitengela led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
Koech has called for investigations into the events that led to the police lobbing teargas to disperse the crowd. The lawmaker has said that there should be political tolerance. Koech has also noted that there have been incidents of self-inflicted violence in political meetings by leaders, and therefore, there is a need for a thorough investigation into the matter.
“We should allow political tolerance; we should allow our people to give their views, and we should allow people so that we listen to them express what they want. We should listen to their manifestos and what they want to tell the people of the country.
“Having said that, I do not want to blame the police and am sure investigations are being done. Lately, we have seen cases of self-inflicted violence, and that is why I am saying that the police must investigate,” Koech said.

Kitengela rally chaos
Sentiments from Nelson Koech came hours after the Edwin Sifuna-led rally in Kitengela turned chaotic, after police fired teargas and shots in the air to disperse the crowd.
The event, part of the Linda Mwananchi tour, was organised by a faction of opposition leaders, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, drawing a massive crowd, mostly young supporters.
Speaking to his supporters after the incident, Sifuna thanked the residents for their resilience and vowed to continue mobilising despite the challenges.

Sifuna vowed to stand firm, encouraging supporters to remain engaged and resilient as the campaign continues, framing the incident as a test of unity and resolve.
“Thank you, Kitengela. Despite all the harassment, intimidation and violence from this morning, you showed up. They first destroyed our dais and sound equipment in the morning, and the state goons have now teargassed a peaceful assembly and brought it to an abrupt end. We shall not relent,” Edwin Sifuna stated.
