Ndia Member of Parliament (MP) George Kariuki has directed the construction company that excavated an open quarry in Kiandai, Ndia Constituency, to immediately fence and secure the site after the water-filled pit claimed two lives.

In a press briefing on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, Kariuki expressed deep sympathy to the affected families and stressed that the tragedy could have been avoided if the site had been properly secured.

“It is heartbreaking to lose young lives in a place that should have been fenced long ago. I have spoken to the contractor, and they have understood the seriousness of this matter,” he said.

The legislator revealed that the contractor had agreed to support the affected families.

“We are working closely with the company to ensure the families receive some form of compensation to comfort them during this difficult period,” he added.

Kariuki’s directive came after two children were said to have drowned in the quarry dam. It is said the two had gone to the site to fish before deciding to swim, where one of them got into difficulty and the other attempted to help, resulting in both losing their lives.

A previous incident had already claimed another life at the same location. The legislator also announced plans to rehabilitate the abandoned quarry so it can benefit the local community instead of posing a danger.

“This site will not remain a hazard. We intend to rehabilitate it and turn it into something useful for the people of Kiandai,” he assured.

The MP further urged residents to stop vandalising or stealing fencing materials, warning that such acts compromise safety measures.

“When materials meant to secure the fence are stolen, the community is left exposed. I’m asking everyone to protect these safety measures rather than destroy them,” he cautioned.

The families have scheduled the burials for Thursday, December 4, and Friday, December 5, 2025.

The Kiandai quarry incident

The bodies of two boys who drowned in a dam were retrieved after a day of searching in Kiandai, Kirinyaga County.

The two had drowned on Thursday, November 27, 2025, as they played in the water. Police said they were aged 10 and 15.

It was not until the following day that the bodies were retrieved from the dam by the Kenya Red Cross and Kirinyaga Fire Fighters officials.

The incident increased to four, the number of people who were reported drowned over the weekend alone.

Police said the other incident was reported in the Savannah area, Nairobi, where the Ngong River meanders.

Police said a decomposed body of a man was found lying on the riverbank of the Ngong River long after he had died.

The body was swept to the area before it was discovered Friday afternoon. It had no identification documents and was moved to the mortuary pending an identification and autopsy.
