Natembeya nursing injuries after Christmas accident, county official confirms
By Kenneth Mwenda, December 29, 2025Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya is recovering after sustaining a broken leg in an accident that occurred during the Christmas festivities, county officials have confirmed.
The news was made public on Monday, December 29, 2025, by Trans Nzoia County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Lands, Housing, Physical Planning and Urban Development, Pius Gumo. He spoke during the memorial service of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, where he represented the governor.
Gumo told mourners that Natembeya was unable to attend the service because he was nursing injuries from the accident. He did not disclose the exact nature or location of the incident.
“I have brought a condolence message from Governor George Natembeya. He was involved in an accident during Christmas and broke his leg; that is why he could not be here. He would have loved to be present to console the family,” Gumo said.

According to the CECM, the governor suffered serious injuries to one of his legs, leaving him temporarily immobile. However, officials said his condition is stable and he is recuperating well.
Natembeya has been largely absent from public events in recent weeks, a situation that had raised questions among residents and political observers. The latest disclosure has clarified that his absence was due to the injuries sustained in the accident.
Final public appearance
Before the incident, the governor made his last public appearance on December 24, 2025, when he visited Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital in Trans Nzoia County. During the visit, Natembeya cleared hospital bills amounting to more than Ksh6 million for patients, most of them mothers.
The move brought relief to families who had struggled to settle medical costs during the festive season.

The governor also interacted with patients and hospital staff, listening to concerns about healthcare services in the county. Two days later, on Boxing Day, beneficiaries confirmed that the county had settled the outstanding bills in full.
During the memorial service, Gumo also delivered Natembeya’s condolence message to the family of the late Cyrus Jirongo. He described Jirongo as a truthful leader who consistently championed the interests of ordinary citizens in Bungoma County and across the country.
Jirongo died earlier this month in a road accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway. His death has sparked public debate, with some leaders questioning the circumstances surrounding the crash.
During a separate farewell service, DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa criticised the government’s silence and called for a comprehensive report into the incident. Natembeya had previously joined calls for traditional rites to be observed during Jirongo’s burial, citing unresolved questions surrounding the former minister’s death.
