Nandi Hills MP condemns fake ID use in Eldoret kidney harvesting
By Kenneth Mwenda, September 27, 2025Nandi Hills MP Bernard Kibor Kitur has strongly condemned the rising incidents of illegal kidney harvesting in Eldoret and its surrounding areas, highlighting that criminals are using falsified IDs to cover up their activities.
In a press statement, he described the reports as serious and called for urgent action to protect vulnerable citizens.
The MP highlighted the case of Amon Kipruto Melly, a 22-year-old from Kipkenyo, whose mother, Leah Chepkorir, reported that her son had his kidney harvested at a local hospital in June 2024.
According to the report, Amon received Ksh600,000, far less than the Ksh1.2 million promised. The case was reported to Langas Police Station under OB 41 on August 31, 2024.
Kitur said multiple investigations have implicated the local hospital in facilitating illegal kidney transplants and organ trafficking.
He added that criminal syndicates appear to exploit hospital infrastructure and vulnerable young men, often issuing fake alien IDs to cover up their activities.
“This matter demands transparency, accountability, and swift action. No individual or institution is above the law,” he stated.
According to documents submitted to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), several patients had their genuine IDs replaced with falsified alien IDs. For example, Amon Kipruto Melly’s genuine ID 41375146 was registered under a Somali identity as Amon Hussein Kipruto. Another man, Emmanuel Kipkosgei, had his ID replaced with a Somali name, Abdizemek Ibrahim Hussein.
The MP outlined key concerns, including ongoing investigations, measures to ensure hospitals adhere to ethical standards, and steps to dismantle criminal syndicates. He also asked what protections are in place for residents and what support victims of illegal organ harvesting receive.
Background on hospital investigations
Earlier in August, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale issued a stern warning to a hospital CEO over claimed malpractice. The CS stated that the CEO could face prosecution, deportation, or revocation of citizenship, pending an investigation. Duale stressed the government’s commitment to strengthening the health workforce and ensuring ethical practices in the sector.
In the press statement, MP Kitur emphasised that protecting human rights and the integrity of the healthcare system is paramount.
“We are committed to upholding human rights, protecting the dignity of every citizen, and ensuring that the integrity of our healthcare system is not compromised by criminal elements,” he said.
The MP added that further information would be shared as investigations progress, emphasising that tackling illegal organ harvesting is crucial for safeguarding human dignity, upholding ethical standards, and protecting the integrity of Kenya’s healthcare system.
“Further updates will be issued as more verified information becomes available. Currently, we are keen to address these critical questions,” he concluded.
