Nakuru Senator Tabitha Karanja has called on the government to act swiftly to assist residents of Kihoto Village in Nakuru County, who have been displaced by the rising waters of Lake Naivasha.

Speaking while seeking a statement from the Senate Standing Committee on National Security on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, Defence and Foreign Relations, Senator Karanja highlighted the growing humanitarian crisis caused by the floods.

She noted that homes have been submerged, property destroyed, and families exposed to significant health risks.

“It is deeply concerning that entire households in Kihoto have been forced out of their homes with limited support. The Government must act swiftly to ensure that affected residents receive the necessary humanitarian assistance,” the Senator stated.

Senator Karanja questioned the preparedness and response capacity of the Nakuru County Government, pointing out that an Emergency Fund exists to mitigate such crises. She expressed concern that the fund has not been effectively utilised to support the displaced families.

“The Senator questioned the level of preparedness by the Nakuru County Government and the effectiveness of its response, despite the presence of an Emergency Fund meant for such crises,” the statement reads

Local residents have described harrowing scenes as floodwaters continue to rise, destroying farmlands and isolating homes. Community members fear prolonged displacement could worsen public health risks and strain local resources.

Senator Karanja’s appeal comes amid increasing concerns about the impact of extreme weather events in Kenya, particularly around Lake Naivasha, where rising water levels have become a recurring threat to surrounding communities.

“She further called for clear measures to ensure displaced families receive essential humanitarian aid, including food, shelter, medical care, and sanitation services,” the statement reads
