Nairobi Water issues supply disruption notice after pipeline burst

By , March 21, 2026

Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company has announced a temporary interruption of water supply in several parts of the city after a major pipeline burst along the Kabete–Kilimani transmission line.

In a public notice shared on Saturday, March 21, 2026, the utility said the disruption is affecting both residential and commercial areas. The company confirmed that its technical teams moved quickly to the site and have begun repair works.

The affected areas include Kileleshwa, Kilimani, State House, Ngumo, KEMRI, Highrise, Nairobi West, Upperhill and Madaraka, along with surrounding estates.

According to Nairobi Water, the incident occurred at around 1:00 am on Friday, March 20, 2026, when the main transmission pipeline developed a fault.

“This is to inform you of a temporary water supply interruption in your area due to a burst pipe on the major Kabete–Kilimani transmission pipeline,” the company said in its notice.

Repairs ongoing, supply expected

Engineers are currently replacing the damaged section of the pipeline, conducting pressure testing, and working to safely restore the system. The utility said the work is ongoing and is being handled with urgency to avoid further disruption.

“Our technical teams responded immediately, and repairs are ongoing to replace the damaged section, conduct pressure testing, and safely restore the system,” the statement added.

Nairobi Water expects supply to return to normal by Sunday, March 22, 2026, at 6:00 pm, if the repairs proceed as planned.

The company has urged residents in the affected areas to use available water carefully during the outage.

“We advise you use any stored water sparingly and efficiently,” the notice read.

It also said water bowser services are available for emergency and priority needs. Residents can request the service by dialling *260# and selecting the bowser option.

The latest disruption comes just weeks after another major incident in the city, when flooding damaged a pipeline along Outer Ring Road, cutting supply to parts of Eastlands. Nairobi Water has faced repeated pressure to maintain a stable supply as ageing infrastructure and extreme weather continue to affect operations.
