Nairobi MCAs ask government to absorb 700 officers

Nairobi MCAs yesterday asked the National government to absorb the 700 former Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) enforcement officers whose contracts ended last year.

A report tabled yesterday by the assembly’s labour committee recommended the Public Service Commission (PSC) hires the now jobless officers.

Governor Johnson Sakaja has previously assured the affected former enforcement officers that they will be re-hired by the county. The officers had signed a three-year contract with the defunct NMS.

Majority leader Peter Imwatok (left) said the county should not be made to bear the burden of absorbing the officers.

“The truth is that the 700 officers were never employed through the right channels. We will not allow that. Let everyone carry their own cross,” said Imwatok.

The Makongeni MCA said going forward, the county assembly will formulate regulations to guide the hiring and firing of county staff.

“I am reliably informed that most of the 700 were actually shipped from other counties. Very few are city residents. Moving forward we will come with a law that will guide how the county employs staff. We need to reward our people who campaigned for us,” he said.

Minority leader Anthony Kiragu said the county assembly will not regularize any irregularity by absorbing staff who were not hired using the proper channels.

“They never followed the right channels of deployment. If indeed the governor wants them to work for the county, let him wait until there are vacancies. We will not allow an illegality to take place at this particular time,” he said.
