Mwea MP: I don’t regret impeaching Gachagua

By , April 23, 2026

Mwea Member of Parliament Mary Maingi has stood by her decision to support the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saying she has no regrets and would make the same choice again.

Speaking during a Kameme TV interview on April 23, 2026, Maingi defended her vote and dismissed claims that she acted out of pressure or political influence.

“I would do it again and again,” she said. “Having him was a mistake in the first place. That seat was too big for him, I think.”

Her comments add to the ongoing political tension in the Mount Kenya region, where leaders remain divided following Gachagua’s removal from office in October 2024.

Maingi rejected suggestions that Gachagua played a key role in delivering the region’s support to President William Ruto during the 2022 election. She argued that he was largely unknown to many voters before his nomination as running mate.

Hapana, who said so?” she said. “If you check his clips, none knew him in the mountain until Ruto brought him. The person who was known was his late brother. I came to know him when Ruto brought him.”

Mount Kenya leadership debate

She added that Mount Kenya had other senior leaders who, in her view, were more experienced and better suited for national leadership roles.

“We did not know this person. This person was a one-term MP. And that term had COVID for two years, so we are talking of three years,” she said. “We have senior politicians in this country in Mt Kenya, someone like Kiunjuri, a senior politician; someone like Ichung’wah; someone like JK Kariuki… people like Kindiki, people who have been there.”

Maingi also defended Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who took office after Gachagua’s impeachment. She said Kindiki understands his role and is performing well.

“Kindiki is doing his work well,” she said. “Because when you hire a person, you give him or her a job description so that he can apply and see whether he can cope with the jobs. Kindiki understands the assignment. Principal assistant to the president.”

Her remarks come as Gachagua continues to criticise MPs and senators from Mount Kenya who backed his impeachment or later aligned with the Kenya Kwanza administration. Gachagua has repeatedly urged voters to reject what he called “traitors of the mountain” in the 2027 elections.

He has accused some leaders of betraying the region for personal gain and has kept up pressure on those who voted against him in Parliament.

Several politicians who initially supported Gachagua during his Senate trial have since changed their position. Some have joined government ranks, while others have shifted political alliances.

Maingi, however, insisted she has remained consistent. She said her vote reflected her belief that leadership needed change and accountability.
