Justin Muturi pays tribute to late former Laikipia North MP Lempurkel

Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has expressed deep sorrow following the death of former Laikipia North Member of Parliament Mathew Lempurkel, describing him as a good man whose loss will be deeply felt.

In a statement posted on his X account on August 24, 2025, Muturi reflected on his interactions with the late legislator during his tenure as Speaker of the National Assembly, noting that he received the news of Lempurkel’s passing with great sadness.

“I have received with deep sorrow the news of the passing on of Hon. Mathew Lempurkel, former Member of Parliament for Laikipia North Constituency,” Muturi stated.

The former Speaker recalled his working relationship with Lempurkel during their time in Parliament, emphasising the positive impression the late MP left on him.

“I knew Hon. Lempurkel during my time as Speaker of the National Assembly, where we shared many moments in the House. He was a good man, and his loss will be deeply felt by those who knew and interacted with him,” Muturi said.

Condolences extended

Muturi extended his sympathies to Lempurkel’s family and constituents, acknowledging the broader impact of his death on the Laikipia North community.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the people of Laikipia North,” he said.

The former CS concluded his message with prayers for comfort during the mourning period.

“May God grant them comfort during this difficult time, and may his soul rest in eternal peace,” Muturi stated.

Death announcement

According to a statement by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, Mathew Lempurkel Lekidime died while receiving treatment following a road accident, which had occurred a week earlier.

“We mourn the passing of Hon. Mathew Lempurkel Lekidime, the former MP for Laikipia North in the 11th Parliament under the ODM party ticket from 2013 to 2017, through a road accident. May God’s peace and comfort be with his family and the people of Laikipia during this time of grief,” the statement issued on their X account on August 24, 2025, reads.

Lempurkel served as Laikipia North MP from 2013, having been elected on an ODM ticket, until 2017.

He lost the seat to Sarah Korere in the 2017 general election, who has since been serving as the Laikipia North MP.

Lempurkel ditched the ODM party in November 2023 for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Tribute

In addition to Muturi’s statement, Democracy for the Citizens’ Party (DCP) leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also paid tribute to Lempurkel, noting his contributions to national and community affairs.

“I have learnt of the untimely passing on of Hon. Mathew Lempurkel with a heavy heart. Hon. Lempurkel was a member of the DCP and former Member of Parliament for Laikipia North. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may Almighty God grant strength, comfort, and fortitude to his family, loved ones, and all who cherished him during this moment of grief,” Gachagua wrote on his X account on August 24, 2025.
