Muturi directs CS to file a report on schools closure

By , October 11, 2019

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has directed Education Cabinet secretary George Magoha to present to Parliament a detailed report on the closure of schools across the country.

In the report, Magoha is required to include numbers and details of the schools closed and the ministry’s plans to ensure affected learners access to education.

Muturi issued the directive on Wednesday after Mathare MP Anthony Oluoch sought a statement from the Departmental Committee on Education on government plans for affected pupils, especially those set to sit their national examinations.

The MP termed reactionary the directive to close schools with structures considered unsafe or sub-standard.

Private schools are the worst hit by the crackdown launched after a class collapsed in a city school, killing eight pupils.

The move comes after private school owners petitioned the government to consider its directive, saying they are ready to rectify anomalies pointed out by ministry officials.
