Murkomen warns drug barons after Ksh3M cannabis bust in Kitale
By Kenneth Mwenda, July 28, 2025Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a strong warning to drug traffickers after a successful raid in Kitale town on Sunday night, July 27, 2025, led to the seizure of cannabis worth over Ksh3 million.
The raid, carried out by security officers working alongside the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), took place just hours before the Jukwaa la Usalama Trans Nzoia forum. The team included the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), Administration Police, and local police, who stormed a suspected drug den after weeks of surveillance.
Six people were arrested during the operation and are now being questioned. The cannabis, carefully packed in sacks, was found hidden in a residential house on the outskirts of Kitale. Authorities believe the drugs were meant for distribution across several towns in the region.
Government vows continued crackdown
Following the raid, Murkomen took to social media on Monday, July 28, 2025, to support the operation and warn those involved in the illegal trade.
“We must do everything to safeguard our nation from the devastating effects of drugs and illicit brews,” he posted. “Similar crackdowns will continue across the country until we rid our nation of these harmful substances which are ruining the lives of our young people.”
NACADA CEO Anthony Omerikwa also commended the security agencies and said the fight against drugs was gaining ground. He urged residents to stay alert and report suspicious behaviour to help police catch more traffickers.
“Last night’s seizure is a clear message to those poisoning our society: your days are numbered,” Omerikwa said. “We will not rest until all traffickers, users, and distributors are brought to book.”
He also revealed that the operation was supported by Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli, who helped deploy a specialised team from the National Police Service to ensure the raid ran smoothly.
The raid signals the government’s increased efforts to tackle drug trafficking across Kenya, with more operations expected in the near future.
