By , August 11, 2025

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has led a high-level security meeting in Narok County under the ongoing Jukwaa La Usalama initiative, targeting the growing challenges of land-related disputes, cattle rustling, and violence in the region.

Speaking during the 27th Jukwaa La Usalama session in Narok County on Monday, August 11, 2025, Murkomen stressed the urgent need for peaceful conflict resolution.

He urged local communities to embrace dialogue and amicable means to solve land disputes, stressing the need to avoid violence that has already led to injuries among civilians and security personnel.

“We continue encouraging people here to take up measures that will resolve land issues amicably without resorting to violence. We have heard of people being injured, including security officers and civilians,” Murkomen said.

The security talks included a meeting with the county security team, followed by an assessment of the mobile ID registration exercise at the County Commissioner’s office.

The day will be concluded with a town hall meeting involving leaders, security agencies, National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs), the business community, and members of the public at the County Commissioner’s residence.

Murkomen acknowledged the role of the NGAO team, describing them as well-trained to help communities reconcile and find lasting solutions.

“I am glad some of the land issues inside conservancies have been resolved,” he added.

The forum drew key government officials, including Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat (KPS), Deputy Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli (APS), Principal Administrative Secretary Beverly Opwora, Secretary of National Administration Moses Lilan, Secretary of Internal Security Thomas Saka, representatives from the National Registration Bureau, Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati, and Narok County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia.

The discussions centred on strengthening collaboration among security agencies and community leaders to maintain peace and stability in Narok County, which has been a hotspot for land conflicts due to competing claims and historic grievances.

The Jukwaa La Usalama initiative has been instrumental in fostering dialogue across counties, providing a platform where grievances can be aired and addressed before escalating to violence.

As land conflicts continue to pose a threat to peace in Narok and other counties, leaders like Murkomen are calling for sustained efforts to resolve disputes through dialogue, respect for the rule of law, and community engagement.

The successful resolution of some disputes within conservancies signals progress, but more work remains to ensure long-term peace and security for all residents.
