Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Thursday, July 31, 2025, led a high-level security forum in Laikipia County, where he urged local leaders and residents to support the government’s ongoing reforms in national identification.

He also emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between national and county governments to boost service delivery.

Speaking during the Jukwaa la Usalama event in Nanyuki, Murkomen assessed the progress of the ongoing mobile ID registration exercise and urged Laikipia residents to take full advantage of the initiative, especially first-time applicants who can now access the document at no cost.

“I assessed the mobile ID registration exercise at the Laikipia County Commissioner’s Office grounds in Nanyuki and urged residents to take advantage of our reforms, which include free issuance to first-time applicants,” the CS said.

Murkomen praised the efforts by Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu and area MPs for agreeing to help distribute the live capture machines, which he said have significantly improved the speed and accessibility of issuing national ID cards in the region..

“I laud Governor Irungu and MPs for agreeing to help distribute the live capture machines, which are speeding up the issuance of IDs, making the crucial document more accessible,” Murkomen noted, adding that this cooperation between leaders reflects the success of the government’s push to decentralise essential services.

Earlier, the CS paid a courtesy call to the governor’s office, where the two leaders held talks centred on deepening working relationships between the two levels of government. Murkomen emphasised that close collaboration is key to meeting the everyday needs of Kenyans.

“I called for a strengthened working relationship between the two levels of government, which is critical for improved service delivery to residents,” Murkomen stated.

The event brought together top security and government officials, underlining the importance of cross-agency coordination. Present at the event were Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Deputy Inspector General of Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli, GSU Commandant Ranson Lolmodooni, and several Members of Parliament, including Mwangi Kiunjuri (Laikipia East), Sarah Korere (Laikipia North), and County MP Jane Kagiri.

Also in attendance were National Administration Principal Administrative Secretary Beverly Opwora, Secretary of National Registration Christopher Wanjau, NACADA CEO Dr. Anthony Omerikwa, Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati, Regional Administration Police Commander John Amadadi, Laikipia County Commissioner Onesmus Kyatha, and other senior officials.

The Laikipia chapter of Jukwaa la Usalama forms part of the Interior Ministry’s wider push to engage local leadership in building safer, more responsive communities while enhancing public trust in national systems.

The mobile ID program, alongside improved intergovernmental relations, is seen as a strategic step toward modernising service delivery across Kenya.
