Murkomen announces plan to standardise administrative units and addresses ID misuse in Kitui
Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen has shared updates on new government policies and ongoing initiatives, stating that Kitui County residents will soon see more structured administrative units.
In a statement shared on X on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, Murkomen explained that the government is finalising a policy to standardise administrative units while continuing to operationalise units already gazetted.
Murkomen pointed out the outcomes of consultations achieved through the Jukwaa La Usalama platform, stating that the policy will improve service delivery across the county.

“Following our Jukwaa La Usalama consultations, we have developed a policy to standardise the creation of administrative units, now in its final stages. In the meantime, we will continue to operationalise already gazetted units as funds become available, bringing services closer to wananchi,” the statement reads.
“Officially commissioned Nuu Sub-County in Kitui County and flagged off relief food to various locations in the region,” he wrote.
Murkomen further addressed security concerns in areas affected by resource-based conflicts, saying that police units would be deployed to ensure peace and that officers would be posted to stations already constructed.
“To address insecurity driven by resource conflicts in parts of the county, we will deploy formed-up police units, as we prepare to post officers to the police stations already built,” he wrote.

Murkomen also warned against the misuse of national identification cards, noting that some are being held by unscrupulous moneylenders as security and stating that those holding IDs should return them or face prosecution.
“Even as we make it easier for Kenyans to obtain IDs, many are held by rogue moneylenders as security. Anybody holding another person’s ID cards should return the crucial document or face prosecution. An ID is not legal tender to exchange for goods or services,” the statement reads.
“We were in the company of Principal Administrative Secretary for National Administration Beverly Opwora, Eastern Regional Commissioner Paul Rotich, and Kitui County Commissioner Erastus Mbui and Nuu Deputy County Commissioner Washington Khoi, among other senior officials,” the statement reads.
