Murang’a set to sink 20 boreholes in six months, says Kang’ata

The Murang’a  County government is set to drill 20 boreholes to boost its water supply to residents.

Governor Irungu Kang’ata said priority will be given to the areas which don’t have piped water and where residents are forced to fetch water from the rivers.

Speaking during the celebrations to mark World Water Day at Mbogoini Primary School in Kigumo, yesterday, Kang’ata said the project is set to be complete in six months adding it will be implemented under the community project kitty.

“We allocated funds to the ward representative for development and part of the money will be used to drill the boreholes,” he said.

The governor said water coverage in the county stands at 60 per cent adding that e aims at reaching to 80 per cent in the next one year.

“We want to boost water supply to the residents for domestic use and irrigation as this will help improve their livelihood,” he remarked.

The governor said the county will collaborate with the water companies in the area for the last mile connectivity of the water.

Water Services Providers Association chief executive Anthony Ambugo said nationally water coverage stands at 60 per cent.

Ambugo said there are 100 water providing companies but some are not able to reach out to the consumers in their areas of jurisdiction which has affected water supply.

He however said acute water shortage in the country has been a challenge to the water providers.
