Mukumu Girls to begin phased reopening from May 2
By dennis-lumiti, April 20, 2023Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School will reopen in phases starting Tuesday, May 2.
A caretaker committee running the institution said yesterday that the students, teachers, workers parents and parents will undergo a rigorous guiding and counseling session before studies resume.
The committee said the school would not manage to handle all the 2,028 learners if they reported on the same day.
And the Ministry of Education has embarked on drilling of another borehole at the school which is expected to be ready for use by May 2.
Restore normalcy
New Principal Jane Mmbone said yesterday that they were putting all mechanisms in place to ensure the reopening was seamless.
“We are working round the clock to make sure everything is set well before the reopening date,” she said.
She said thorough cleanliness was ongoing.
Shinyalu MP Fred Ikana said he would be at hand to receive the learners on the reopening date.
“Mukumu Girls is one of our top schools in this constituency and we shall do whatever it takes to restore normalcy and prepare our girls, especially those in Form Four, for the national examinations,” he added.
The institution was shut down indefinitely following an outbreak of a mysterious disease that claimed the lives of a teacher and three students. Several students are still hospitalised.
The crisis led to the transfer of former Principal Fridah Ndolo and dissolution of the Board of Management.
