Muhoozi threatens to cut all ties with Turkey in 30 days

By , April 11, 2026

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces of Uganda, has given a stern warning to Turkey, threatening to break diplomatic ties with Turkey within 30 days unless unspecified issues are resolved.

The Ugandan military general, in a strongly worded statement on his X handle on Saturday, April 11, 2026, said that he was fed up with what he termed a long period of inaction on the part of Turkey, and this was a pointer to a possible change in the diplomatic relationship between the two nations.

“The real problem is Turkey! We have waited for them to rehabilitate themselves, but wapi! We are going to end ALL diplomatic relations with Turkey in the next 30 days if they do not address our issues! “Muhoozi stated.

He further escalated the warning by indicating that Uganda could also target Turkish aviation operations, suggesting potential restrictions on air travel between the two nations if the dispute is not resolved.

“We shall block their airlines too!” Muhoozi Kainerugaba added.

Although it is not clear what the grievances are, the comments are indicative of rising tensions and discontent within the Ugandan leadership regarding the relationship with Ankara. The term ‘rehabilitate’ suggests a political, security, or economic issue, but no official statement has been made.

This caution is an unusual and major escalation because the severance of diplomatic relations is a measure that comes at the end of the road in international relations. Analysts add that this move may have far-reaching consequences, as it will impact trade, military collaboration, and bilateral agreements between Uganda and Turkey.

Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s statement is likely to provoke a response not only from both governments but also from regional and international stakeholders monitoring the situation. Turkey is yet to respond to the ultimatum officially.

If enacted, the move would radically change Uganda-Turkey relations and could shift the regional power balance.
