The Chinese government has issued a statement following the disturbing incident where the country’s national was captured assaulting a Kenyan employee in a viral video.

In a statement shared by the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi on Monday, November 17, 2025, the government confirmed that relevant authorities are taking appropriate actions on the matter.

Disappointed

As part of following up on the matter, the Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Ministry revealed that the Chinese embassy in Nairobi had expressed its disappointment with the act.

“In a notable diplomatic response, the Chinese Embassy in Nairobi issued a statement expressing disappointment over the assault and reaffirming its expectation that all Chinese citizens in Kenya follow Kenyan laws and cultural norms,” part of the statement read.

While condemning the incident, the embassy stressed that it expects its citizens to abide by the local laws and uphold the principle of mutual respect.

The embassy added that the expectation extended to all Chinese citizens living and working in Kenya.

Expectation

“The Embassy consistently requires Chinese citizens in Kenya to strictly abide by local laws, regulations, and cultural customs, and the vast majority of them do so. We believe this isolated incident should not affect investment cooperation between Chinese and Kenyan companies, but it is a reminder to all Chinese citizens in Kenya to uphold the principle of mutual respect with Kenyan friends and behave in accordance with the laws, regulations, and cultural customs of Kenya.”

Meanwhile, the Kenyan government has reiterated that it welcomes foreign investment but requires all foreign nationals to abide by Kenyan laws and uphold mutual respect.

Commitment

“Kenya continues to welcome investors, skilled professionals, and development partners from across the world. However, the government remains firm that all foreign nationals must conduct themselves within the framework of Kenyan laws and uphold respect for the country’s culture and citizens.”

The government stated that the subsequent calls for deportation, corporate action, and diplomatic response from the Chinese embassy affirm the government’s commitment to protecting Kenyan workers and maintaining a safe and respectful working environment for all.

The video had sparked public debate across social media platforms, with many Kenyans calling for stricter oversight of foreign workers and improved protection for Kenyan employees.

Earlier on, Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli had demanded the immediate deportation of the Chinese national.
