Mudavadi reveals details of the EAC-SADC joint ministerial meeting

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who doubles as Foreign Affairs CS, has revealed the details of the joint ministerial meeting of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in Harare, Zimbabwe, that he co-chaired on Monday, March 17, 2025.

Mudavadi, in a statement shared via his official X account, said that the EAC and SADC ministers had assessed the strides made in implementing the February 2025 resolutions adopted by heads of state and government on the evolving humanitarian and security situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

He co-chaired the meeting with Amon Murwira, the chairperson of the SADC Council of Ministers and Zimbabwe’s minister for foreign affairs and international trade.

“Co-chaired the Joint Ministerial Meeting of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in Harare, Zimbabwe, where we assessed the strides made in implementing the February 2025 resolutions adopted by Heads of State and Government on the evolving humanitarian and security situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo,” Mudavadi stated.

Mudavadi on details of meeting

Mudavadi further revealed that the meeting had engaged in in-depth discussions on the report by the EAC-SADC Chiefs of Defence following the Nairobi and Dar es Salaam meetings, while also addressing key outstanding issues vital to achieving sustainable peace and stability in the region.

Moreover, he pointed out that the ministers outlined a comprehensive roadmap featuring immediate, medium, and long-term strategies, including resource mobilization and financial frameworks, to support the ongoing peace efforts.

“The meeting engaged in in-depth discussions on the report by the EAC-SADC Chiefs of Defence following the Nairobi and Dar es Salaam meetings, while also addressing key outstanding issues vital to achieving sustainable peace and stability in the region. Ministers further outlined a comprehensive roadmap featuring immediate, medium, and long-term strategies, including resource mobilization and financial frameworks, to support the ongoing peace efforts. Appreciation to my co-chair, Prof. Amon Murwira, Chairperson of the SADC Council of Ministers and Zimbabwe’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Trade, for the collaborative spirit as we work towards African-led solutions for African challenges,” Mudavadi stated.

DRC peace

The meeting is a follow-up engagement under the Dar es Salaam resolutions of the joint summit of the Heads of State and Government held on February 8, 2025, and was also aimed at creating a comprehensive plan for peace that focused on the root causes of conflict in eastern DRC and set the process for the transformation of the political climate within the DRC.

Before the meeting in Harare, Mudavadi chaired a joint ministerial meeting of EAC foreign and defence ministers on the security situation in DRC.
