By , July 8, 2025

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, held a closed-door meeting with Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli.

The meeting, which took place at Mudavadi’s office, focused on key national issues, including economic empowerment, social cohesion, and the need for unified leadership in addressing the country’s pressing challenges.

Mudavadi emphasised the shared responsibility among leaders and institutions to remain focused on initiatives that improve the lives of all Kenyans. The engagement with Atwoli also highlighted the role of dialogue in fostering unity and shaping a stable national future through collective action and policy alignment.

“Hosted Dr Atwoli, Secretary General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions, who paid me a courtesy call. Our conversation delved into critical national matters, from economic empowerment and social cohesion to the shared responsibility of ensuring that our collective focus remains steadfast on improving the lives of all citizens,” Musalia said.

The session comes at a time when the country is grappling with growing public demands for reforms and economic stability, placing greater importance on collaborative efforts between the government and workers’ unions.

“It was an enriching exchange of ideas, underscoring the importance of unity and purposeful action in shaping a better future.” He added.

Atwoli’s advice to Maraga

This comes days after Francis Atwoli launched a scathing attack on political leaders and former Chief Justice David Maraga, accusing them of misleading Gen Z youth into participating in violent anti-government protests.

Speaking during a fundraiser at Burinda Catholic Church in Butula Constituency, Busia County, on Sunday, June 29, 2025, Atwoli said the recent wave of protests was no longer about peaceful demonstrations but had been hijacked by politicians with ulterior motives.

He further claimed that Maraga, who served as Kenya’s Chief Justice from 2016 to 2021, was spotted escorting his grandchildren to participate in destructive acts, including torching property during the protests.

Wale watu mlikuwa mnaona wanachoma police station wanachukua mabunduki; Gen Z hawawezi kufanya kazi kama hiyo. Wale watu mliona barabarani, kina Maraga… Maraga alikuwa Chief Justice; yeye sio Gen Z. Anasindikiza wajukuu wake kwenda kuchoma mali ya watu,” Atwoli said.

Translation: “Those people you saw burning police stations and taking guns, that’s not something Gen Z can do. The people you saw in the streets, like Maraga… Maraga was the Chief Justice; he’s not Gen Z. He was escorting his grandchildren to go destroy people’s property.”
