Mudavadi: Enock Andanje took early retirement to take stab at Malava MP seat
By Faith Lagat, August 15, 2025The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is mourning the sudden death of Enock Andanje, an aspirant in the upcoming Malava Constituency by-election, who collapsed and died on Friday, August 15, 2025, during a Widows’ Empowerment Forum in Kakamega County.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi led tributes to the former Bungoma High School principal, describing him as a dedicated leader whose passing was a blow to both family and community.
“I have received with deep sadness the news of the passing of Dr Enock Andanje, one of our UDA aspirants in the upcoming Malava by-election,” Mudavadi said.
He noted that Andanje had recently taken early retirement to offer “leadership and vision” to the people of Malava – a rare career transition, with only 5 per cent of Kenyan educators moving into politics, according to national statistics.

A commitment to service
Mudavadi said Andanje’s demise was not only a personal tragedy but also a setback to the democratic process. “His sudden demise is not only a personal loss to his family but also a blow to our community and the democratic process he sought to serve,” he stated. He extended condolences to the bereaved family and urged patience as the cause of death awaits confirmation through a medical report.
The Prime Cabinet Secretary added that Andanje was scheduled to join him at the empowerment forum in Kabras West on the day of his passing – an event meant to highlight community upliftment. “His absence will be deeply felt,” he said. The gathering was part of UDA’s grassroots strategy to consolidate support in Malava, following the ANC merger.

Party and public tributes
In a separate message, UDA Secretary General Senator Hassan Omar Hassan described Andanje as “a dedicated servant of the people, a voice for the vulnerable, and a true believer in empowerment and youth.” He said Andanje’s vision for Malava was anchored in unity, dignity, and opportunity for all.
His death comes amid a competitive political climate, with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission reporting a 20% surge in candidate registrations. A 2023 Kenya Medical Research Institute study also noted a 15% rise in sudden cardiac events linked to campaign stress.
UDA extended its sympathies to the family, friends, and supporters of the late aspirant, with prayers for his soul to rest in peace – sentiments echoed across the political divide.
