Members of Parliament have pledged to lobby for additional funding to complete a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Mombasa County after inspecting the facility.

The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Social Protection, chaired by Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a, toured the multi-purpose rescue centre located in Mwakirunge, Kisauni Constituency, on Saturday, May 30, 2026.

According to a statement by the Parliament of Kenya on May 30, 2026, the legislators praised the project, describing it as a critical intervention in supporting women and girls affected by gender-based violence.

Speaking during the visit, Ng’ang’a said the committee would engage the Budget and Appropriations Committee to secure additional resources for the facility’s completion.

“We shall appeal to the Budget and Appropriations Committee to allocate funds for a perimeter wall, security lights and the expansion of the road leading to this place,” she said.

Development initiative

Committee Vice Chairperson Hillary Kosgei lauded the project and urged residents to safeguard development initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of vulnerable groups.

Tana River MP Amina Dika Abdullahi described the facility as a practical response to the growing challenge of gender-based violence.

“We must commend the great work done by Hon. Zamzam to support and protect women in this area. Most people only speak of such initiatives with no real action, but she has brought this GBV rescue centre to life,” she said.

In her remarks, MP Zamzam narrated the efforts behind the construction of the property that sits on a 2-acre parcel of land in the middle of Mwakirunge.

“My main motivation to build this centre came from my personal experience as a woman, and having witnessed how hard it is for women to recover after undergoing abuse.” Said Hon. Zamzam.

She attributed the success of the project to the support received from the committee and the national leadership.

“NGAAF money has to be used properly, and to the benefit of those it’s intended for. This Centre is just the beginning of our long-term efforts to ensure that our women and girls are safeguarded from every possible harm,” the Mombasa County MP said.

The MPs urged women and girls to report cases of abuse without fear or shame of victimisation, emphasising their commitment as leaders to ensuring that GBV cases are reduced significantly, if not completely eradicated.
