MP Eric Wamumbi calls for Governor Kahiga’s impeachment over celebratory remarks on Raila’s death

Mathira Member of Parliament Eric Wamumbi has called for the immediate impeachment of Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga following his controversial remarks that celebrated the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Tuesday evening, October 21, 2025, Wamumbi urged Members of the Nyeri County Assembly to table an impeachment motion against the governor without delay.

“Nyeri County MCAs, over to you. That motion should only have one charge. Table it tomorrow afternoon, Wednesday the 22nd of October 2025,” Wamumbi said. “Mt Kenya region will not fight with the rest of Kenya because of one reckless person. Apana. Impeach!”

The MP’s call comes amid mounting outrage over Governor Kahiga’s comments during a burial ceremony in Nyeri, where he suggested that Raila’s death was a divine act that disrupted political plans against the Mt Kenya region.

Speaking in Kikuyu, Kahiga had told mourners, “You guys can see what had been planned, but God brought something up. Now it’s total confusion. We did not harbour hate for anyone, but God came through for us.”

His remarks have sparked widespread condemnation from both sides of the political divide, with many leaders accusing him of insensitivity and disrespect during a period of national mourning.

Earlier, ODM Deputy Party Leader Abdulswamad Nassir described the comments as “reckless and shameful,” while UDA Chairperson and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire demanded a public apology, saying Kahiga’s words “do not reflect the views of the Mt Kenya region.”

Several other leaders, including Cabinet Secretaries Wycliffe Oparanya and Opiyo Wandayi, former Governor Charity Ngilu, and Senators Samson Cherargei and John Methu, have also rebuked the governor, describing his statements as divisive and unbecoming of a public official.

Wamumbi, who hails from the same county as Kahiga, said the remarks risked alienating the Mt Kenya region from the rest of the country and tarnishing its reputation for peace and unity.

“Mt Kenya will not fight with the rest of Kenya because of one reckless person,” the MP said, insisting that Kahiga must be held accountable for his words.

The growing pressure adds to a political firestorm that has engulfed Nyeri County since the remarks went viral, with calls intensifying for the governor to apologise or face removal from office.

Raila Odinga, who passed away earlier this month, was a towering figure in Kenya’s political history, revered for his decades-long struggle for democracy, justice, and national unity. His death has united Kenyans across ethnic and political lines, making Kahiga’s comments particularly incendiary in the eyes of many.
