MP Amisi says next police IG should transform Kenya’s internal security to community-friendly force

Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has urged the next Inspector General of Police to transform Kenya’s internal security into a community-friendly force.

Taking to his official X account on Sunday, July 14, 2024, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker stated that police should be giving directions to Kenyans lost in streets instead of shooting at peaceful protesters.

This, Amisi says, will make Kenya the admiration of Africa.

He further noted that the internal security forces should be taken back to law and order.

“The next IG of police should lead Kenya internal security forces into law and order force . I want to see police officer who direct citizens when they are lost in the streets and not shooting protesters. We can make Kenya the admiration of Africa .Kenya needs a renaissance!” the lawmaker stated.

Amisi’s sentiments comes days after IG Japhet Koome resigned after Kenyans pressured President William Ruto to fire him over the deadly anti-government protests that have been witnessed in the country.

Japhet Koome’s resignation

Koome’s resignation followed mounting pressure over police brutality during recent protests that rocked the country.

President William Ruto announced Koome’s resignation and appointed Deputy Inspector General Douglas Kanja, who is in charge of the Kenya Police, to take over in an acting capacity.

Koome was named Inspector General in September 2022 when President Ruto took office, succeeding Hillary Mutyambai.

However, his tenure has been overshadowed by criticism, particularly regarding the police response to the Gen Z protests.

The demonstrations, which called for various government reforms, were met with a heavy-handed police crackdown, leading to numerous injuries and deaths, and igniting calls for accountability.

Top police command overhaul

There has been mounting pressure for an overhaul of the entire top police command accused of failing to secure the country during protests in which more than 40 people were killed.

Upon the recommendation of the National Police Service Commission, President Ruto appointed Eliud Lagat, the General Service Unit Commandant, to be the acting Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Kenya Police.

James Kamau has also been named the acting Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Administration Police.
