Mombasa traders receive relocation orders to allow construction of modern market
The County Government of Mombasa has officially announced the relocation of all traders operating at Makupa/Majengo Market to allow for the construction of a modern market that promises improved facilities, better safety, and a more conducive trading environment.
Traders have been given forty-five (45) days from the date of the notice to safely pack and remove their wares from the current market premises.
In a letter posted on their social media handles and signed by the County Director of Trade, Peter M. Migosi, on Monday, March 2, 2026, the county says that the decision is part of the county’s ongoing commitment to enhance business operations under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
“This initiative reflects both the national and county governments’ dedication to creating jobs, promoting entrepreneurship, and improving trading conditions for the people of Mvita,” the letter stated.

County promises to relocate traders
The county government has also said that temporary relocation will take traders to an open-air market along Majengo Road, where they will continue their businesses while construction takes place. The modern market project is expected to be completed in less than 12 months, after which priority for the new, modern stalls will be given to both current traders and additional applicants. The upgraded facility is designed to accommodate more traders, provide improved storage solutions, enhance security, and create a safer environment for traders and their customers.
The county has urged all traders to comply within the stipulated timeframe to avoid enforcement actions in accordance with Mombasa County laws. Traders are also advised to handle the relocation carefully to prevent damage to their merchandise.
This ambitious project has been termed by the county government as part of a wider effort by the Mombasa county government to transform local markets, improve infrastructure, and boost economic activity within the county. The county government has said that it aims to make local markets more competitive, attract more customers, and provide a platform for traders to grow their businesses.
The relocation and modernisation of Makupa/Majengo Market mark a significant step in Mombasa’s plan to create sustainable business hubs that benefit traders, shoppers, and the wider community alike.
