Mombasa governor Abdulswamad Nassir (pictured) has cast blame on the National Intelligence Service (NIS) for failing to uncover drug barons at the Coast who have continued to ruin lives of young people through the illicit trade.

Nassir wondered how drug trafficking still exists while various government agencies tasked with the mandate of ending illegal drugs trafficking in Mombasa are sitting pretty at the expense of ruined lives.

“We are not requesting, a request is for a favour, we are demanding because it’s our right, to live in a drug free environment, we are telling the security agencies, I sit in the county security committee, but know it’s high time for them to publish openly, and tell Mombasa people, the number of drug traffickers they have arrested and charged,” said Nassir.

He was speaking during the official commemoration of the international day against drug trafficking event held at the treasury square in Mombasa. The governor further asked police to heighten their surveillance and bring to book the traffickers.

“People have lost faith with these agencies, and we don’t want any more what is called an action plan, we want to see an action and result, and we are not requesting, we are demanding,” Nassir reiterated.

Compromise efforts The county governor said previous wars have only been directed to the suppliers and users and not to the real dealers thus continuing to compromise deliberate efforts taken towards eradicating the persistent vice.

“The intelligence in this country knows the movements of everyone, how come they don’t know who sells and distributes the drugs, , why are we not seeing them arrested, how and if the government is unable, let them tell us,” said Nassir.

He asked coastal politicians to set aside their political differences and join the war on drug trafficking in the coastal strip. Nassir said a good political goodwill is needed for the war on illicit trafficking to be won.

“Let’s not sit and arrest only those that are smoking, they are supposed to be rehabilitated, and the county is doing that, but we say that it is a must, as politicians to set aside our political differences and lead in assisting for in the arrest of the real drug barons,” he added.
