Mohammed Ali resumes duties after a 9-month medical leave
Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali has officially resumed his duties after being away on medical leave for approximately nine months due to a knee injury sustained in December 2024.
In a statement posted on his official X account on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, the MP expressed gratitude for being able to return to work, stating that although he still has about four to six months of physiotherapy remaining, he feels blessed to have resumed official duties.
“Feeling blessed to be back at work after 9 months on medical leave. While I still have about 4–6 months of physiotherapy to attain full knee recovery, I thank Allah for being able to resume work officially today,” the MP wrote.

The recovery journey
Ali, who had remained largely silent on national matters during his absence, broke his silence on Saturday, August 2, 2025. Speaking about his health journey, the former investigative journalist revealed that he had undergone three major knee surgeries, two in Kenya and one in India, between December 2024 and May 2025.
He further disclosed that his condition had at one point become life-threatening.
“I have been very quiet for the last nine months; others think I have run away from politics, and others think I am afraid to pick a side. When you are sick, other things can wait; my health comes first. I was very sick; I almost lost my life,” he said.
“I underwent three knee surgeries, two in Kenya and one in India. I was not in a position to say what Kenyans wanted to hear from me. I won’t have mixed politics and my health,” he added.
Now in the recovery phase, Ali confirmed that he has recently started walking again and anticipates a full recovery by December 2025.
“I have started walking. It will take me another four or six months to fully recover. Hopefully by December, I will be able to run,” he noted.
The injury
The injury was sustained during the EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games held in Mombasa in December 2024. In a statement dated December 27, 2024, Ali had informed the public about the extent of the injury and his decision to temporarily suspend public engagements.

“Following the knee injury I sustained during the EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games in Mombasa, I am pleased to share that I have had a successful knee surgery. I am, however, informed by my doctor that my mobility will be limited for at least 3 months to allow for full recovery,” he stated at the time.
“I will therefore be suspending all political engagements and activities during this period, but wish to assure all Nyali constituents that office operations will run as usual. Please keep me in your prayers as I recuperate, and I hope to bounce back even stronger. Mungu wa kwetu sote,” he added.
