The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) gave a final salute to the late Raila Amolo Odinga as they folded the national flag that had draped his coffin and handed it to his widow, Mama Ida Odinga, in a solemn moment at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, Bondo.

The burial took place on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at the Odinga family home in Siaya County, marking the end of an era for one of Kenya’s most influential political figures. The private ceremony was attended by President William Ruto, close family members, church leaders, and military officers.

After the prayers, the military carefully removed the flag from Raila’s coffin, folded it with precision, and presented it to Mama Ida as a symbol of the nation’s gratitude. The moment was quiet and emotional as she received the flag, holding it close while bowing her head in respect.

Raila was buried with two personal items, his iconic hat and his fly whisk, placed beside him in the grave, symbols of his authority, courage, and deep cultural roots.

Ruto vows to uphold legacy

President Ruto, who attended the ceremony, described Raila as a national hero and a mentor whose political legacy would live on.

“Raila Odinga was not just a leader of a party; he was a leader of a people. His vision for Kenya will continue to guide us,” Ruto said.

He also recognised Raila’s longtime aide, Maurice Ogeta, thanking him for his loyalty and service over the years. Ruto recalled their early days in ODM, saying Ogeta had always stood by Raila through difficult times.

The President further reaffirmed his commitment to honouring Raila’s legacy, noting that the partnership between his United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) would remain strong. He said ODM would either form or be part of Kenya’s next government, in line with Raila’s belief in unity and democracy.

The service ended with a 17-gun salute from the military while Raila’s coffin was lowered into the grave. Church leaders led a brief prayer and a moment of silence as the family watched on.

In the peaceful silence of Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, Raila Amolo Odinga was laid to rest beside his loved ones, a statesman whose fight, faith, and service will remain part of Kenya’s story forever.
