Medics to receive salary arrears in new pact with govt – KMPDU’s Mwachi
By Ndiritu Wanjiru, January 21, 2026The government have agreed to pay medical doctors’ arrears of their salaries owing back to July 2025 to the period when the salaries were adjusted.
This follows an affirmation from both ministries and the county governments that funds are available to actualize adjustments made in an agreement with the doctors’ association, KMPDU.

Stakeholders’ engagement
In a statement released by the chairman of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union, Abidan Mwachi, on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, KMPDU stated that all the stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health and the Council of Governors, had reached an agreement on salary adjustments.
Other stakeholders engaged included the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, as well as the national treasury and were used for a multiagency forum that was created in 2023, which has since agreed and completed working on salary notches as well as implementable arrears that were agreed upon and adopted in court.
“We reminded all parties that a multi-agency team had already been constituted in early 2023 and had worked on this matter for over eight months, culminating in agreed salary notches and clearly defined, implementable arrears that were adopted in court in 2024,” read the statement.
KMPDU’s affirmation
The doctors’ union has additionally affirmed that there is an ongoing engagement with the Salary and Remuneration Commission, SRC, on finalizing the framework, for which a report is expected to be made by mid-February after a meeting with the commission on February 10, 2026.
“As a result, there is now an ongoing engagement between the SRC and DPSN to finalise the implementation framework. We expect a substantive progress update and conclusion on this process by mid-February 2026, after our scheduled meeting with SRC,” added the chairperson.

The doctors’ union has additionally committed to remaining steadfast in ensuring that the full implementation of the basic salaries as agreed is done in due time.
