Media fraternity thrown into mourning as Festus Amimo passes on

The Kenyan media fraternity has been thrown into mourning with the passing of veteran radio journalist Festus Amimo.

News of the demise of the highly renowned Dholuo journalist has been confirmed this Sunday, December 7, 2025, by the national broadcaster.

Amimo, who was fondly known as Woud Awasi (the son of Awasi), was a ranking member within the KBC circles and a veteran who carried on his trade with a rare acumen.

Head of Radio

Until his demise, he was the head of the KBC Dholuo radio station, Mayienga FM. He aired the morning show Gari Mokinyi after he rose to the role in 2022.

Before becoming the Dholuo head of the station, Amimo enjoyed a checkered career in the media, serving for over a decade as a radio producer with the national broadcaster.

His demise has seen an outpouring of emotions and tributes, with senior Luo politicians leading in the tributes to one of the pioneers of Luo dialect broadcasting.

Deputy Head of the Government Delivery Unit, Eliud Owalo, described Amimo as a dedicated worker.

Orengo hails Amimo

On his part, Siaya Governor James Orengo hailed the journalist as an exceptional media practitioner who will be dearly missed.

“It is with deep sorrow that I have learned of the passing of Festus Amimo Wuod Awasi. Until his untimely demise, he served with dedication and passion as Head of Mayienga FM, a station of the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC).

“My heartfelt condolences go to his wife and children, his entire family, colleagues, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. May God grant them strength, comfort, and peace during this difficult time.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of Festus Amimo of Mayienga Radio. A calm, collected, and truly gifted soul whose loss is a heavy blow to the entire media fraternity. Your sessions on air were exceptional, marked by grace, depth, and unwavering respect for every guest who sat across from you.
Shine on your path, my good friend, Wuod Awasi. Your voice and spirit will be dearly missed,” Orengo said.

Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi also expressed his shock at the sudden passing of Amimo.

“I am devastated by the news of the untimely demise of Festus Amimo, the Head of KBC’s Mayienga FM Station. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and professional colleagues.
“Festus was a consummate and charismatic media man. He was a dependable ally. R.I.P Wuod Awasi,” he stated.

The deceased also served as the chairperson of the Luo Journalists Association, commonly referred to as Jofwambo.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda and Philip Etale are among other notable figures who have paid tribute to the journalist.
