The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) now wants the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to probe the arrest of Nation Media Group journalist during the Deputy President William Ruto’s rally in Kigumo Constituency, Murang’a County.

In a statement to newsroom, MCK Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo raised concern in the manner in which the journalist was arrested and attempted cover-up by the police.

“While the officers committing blatant violation of the Constitution is clearly visible, the blame game between the local police officers and the Deputy President’s security on who exactly was involved in the matter is worrying, ” Omwoyo said.

He added: “The Council has asked IPOA to help in the identification of the police officers, probe circumstances behind the incident, and ensure prosecution to prevent normalising impunity and threat to press freedom in the country.”

Omwoyo also asked the police to work in harmony with journalists and ensure their safety is guaranteed at all time when on duty.
