McCann stable dominates cup races at Racecourse

HORSE RACING: Stewart McCann’s stable clinched two Cup events Sunday during the return of horse racing at the Ngong Racecourse with Marais and General Lee both clinching important wins.

In the first Cup Race, 1400m Spencer Tyron Trophy, Daniel Miri had to be at his best to  beat Leslie Sercombe atop Frankie by a neck margin at the end.

It was a hugely tactical race with Frankie coming from the middle to step up at the final bend and chase past his immediate challenger to win a seventh cup in 40 attempts in the division.

The gap between The Bar and Pretty Pearl jockeyed by James Muhindi was equally tight with only half a length separating the pair in what was an epic fight between the top three.

The last horse across the line was The Bar by a distance in what was a difficult race  from the Oliver Gray stable.

The race overall was timed at  1:30.03 seconds at the finish line.

In another cup race, 2060m Commander Cup, James Muhindi atoned for his earlier blip to clinch the win riding General Lee from Stewart McCann’s stable.

His win was the sixth off 13 races in the open handicap meet for three year old and over fillies.

The race was clocked at 2:10.02 minutes at the end. General Lee was closely followed by  Robert Wako’s Class Action who was two and half lengths gap adrift with his South African breed.

Storing energy

The long distance race was also tactical and the earlier pacesetters tired in the middle with those that were at the back were advantaged due to storing energy for the final sprint.

Richard Kibet’s Inca Ruler came in third, two and a half lengths behind with Leslie Sercombe jockeying All Over Again finishing last.
