MCA’s last call to kin before their death
Nairobi County Assembly Majority Leader Abdi Guyo has revealed the details of his last phone call to his elder brother, wife and two children moments before they perished in a grisly road accident on the Isiolo-Nanyuki highway on Monday evening.
Speaking to friends and relatives at the Isiolo Muslim Cemetery, where their remains were being interred yesterday morning, a grief stricken Guyo narrated to mourners how his elder brother, who was driving the ill fated Toyota Sienta vehicle called telling him that he had seen him drive in the opposite direction.
“My brother called telling me that he had seen my car being driven at high speed and asked where I was headed, I told him I was headed back to the city,” Guyo, who was driving from Isiolo to Nairobi, narrated.
Distress call
The MCA added that he wished them a safe journey before driving on to Nanyuki, only to be called barely 45 minutes later to be told that they were no more.
“I checked into a Nanyuki restaurant to relax and have coffee, but 45 minutes after I had spoken to my brother, I got a distress call that my brother, his wife, and children had been involved in a fatal accident,” he added.
According to Guyo, though he did not understand why his brother did not use his usual car, the family trip to their home in Isiolo was purposely to visit their extended family and use the opportunity to transfer their votes to Isiolo county.
“As you are aware, the incident happened a day after I was endorsed by my community to run as governor of Isiolo, succeeding Governor Mohamed Kuti. My brother and family were excited on hearing the news, I suppose they traveled for this reason, and maybe God wanted them to rest home, God who is our creator knows why it did happen,” Guyo recounted.
A police report said the accident occurred at around 6.30 pm on the Meru-Isiolo road at Maili Saba area.
“It happened that one Hassan Ibrahim was driving motor vehicle registration number KCP 673R, a Toyota Sienta, from Nairobi to Isiolo, and on reaching the location of the accident, the motor vehicle developed a right tyre defect, made him lose control and went off the road and rammed into the fence.” the report stated.
It added that all the four occupants died on the spot. They were identified as Hassan Ibrahim, 43 (Guyo’s brother), his wife Fatuma Hassan, 39, his children Ralasso Hassan, 14 and Jamila Hassan, 10.
The bodies were moved to the Isiolo Referral Hospital mortuary before being buried yesterday.
The incident comes just days after Kuti dropped his re-election bid due to ill health and endorsed Guyo as his preferred successor.
Kuti said the Matopeni Ward Rep who had declared interest in the Embakasi Central parliamentary seat, is best placed to succeed him.
Regretting his ill health, Kuti explained that everything that has a beginning has an end and that he summoned the elders to ‘return” leadership back to the Sakuye community.
“I have called my community, whom we have agreed unanimously to hand the leadership and running for governor to Spring valley/Matopeni MCA Guyo,” he said, adding that Guyo is best placed to succeed him.
Former governor Godana Doyo, former EACC boss Halakhe Waqo and politician Hussein Tene are among those eyeing the Isiolo gubernatorial seat.
Transform lives
Guyo, a close ally of President Uhuru Kenyatta, said he will seek the Isiolo gubernatorial seat on a Jubilee Party ticket.
“Jubilee is my party and I cannot go anywhere else. We want to transform the lives of our people. That is my aim for going for this seat,” he tsaid ovet the weekend.
