Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i is seemingly making overtures in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Matiang’i who is rumoured to be interested in vying for the presidency is likely to face off the incumbent President William Ruto, Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah and Narc-Kenya Party Leader Martha Karua.
On Monday, Matiang’i was in Ituru village, Gatundu South in Kiambu county during the burial of Joyce Gathoni, mother to David Gacheru, the former Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Kenya in Washington DC.
While addressing mourners, the former CS rallied Kenyans to promote peace and unity across the country.
Dr Matiang’i said that despite the myriad of challenges that Kenyans are facing, they must remain united especially ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Matiang’i, who remained coy about his 2027 plan, noted that the challenges that Kenyans are grappling with do not distinguish which part of the country one comes from or one’s tribe.
Fierce critic
“We are all one people, the challenges we face and what happens to us happens to one people. We follow what the church is telling us, we remain united and love one another,” he said.
The former CS was accompanied by former ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru and former Thika Town MP Eng Patrick Wainaina alias Jungle.
Speaking during the burial ceremony, Wainaina who has turned to be a fierce critic of the ruling Kenya Kwanza administration, divulged that former lawmakers and leaders are joining hands to form a formidable opposition that will keep the government in check.
